The best new game servers to host in 2026 (and why)
Hyped 2026 releases that actually let you self-host: Subnautica 2, Hytale, Windrose, plus what's still in placeholder territory. Honest sizing, real launch dates, no marketing fluff.

A surprising number of the hyped releases this year are landing with day-one dedicated server support. That's a shift from the late-2010s pattern where co-op shipped peer-to-peer and a dedi binary came two patches later (if at all). Here's a snapshot of what's actually self-hostable in 2026, what's coming, and what's still vapor.
We host most of these on our own infrastructure, so the sizing numbers below come from real container metrics — not Steam community guesswork.
1. Subnautica 2 — early access, dedicated server day one
Released: May 14, 2026, on Steam (app id 1962700) and Xbox / PC Game Pass.
Why it's worth hosting: Unknown Worlds finally let players bring up to 8 friends into the alien-ocean survival loop. The dedicated server binary shipped on day one — surprising for an EA, but Unknown Worlds gets it. A 24/7 dedi means your crew can keep building the seabase while you sleep.
Realistic sizing:
| Crew | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 players | 4 GB | Early-game exploration |
| 4–6 players | 6 GB | Mid-game base complexity |
| 6–8 players (EA cap) | 8 GB | Multi-base setups |
Catch: The dedicated build is a Windows binary at EA launch. On Linux it runs through Proton — works fine, but adds a tiny bit of overhead. We bake that into the egg so you don't think about it.
2. Hytale — early access after a decade of waiting
Released: January 13, 2026, via Hypixel Studios' own launcher (no Steam page; that's intentional, the team wants to iterate with their community before facing the Steam cold-discovery wave).
Why it's worth hosting: Hytale is the closest thing the Minecraft community has had to a credible "next step" — block-based but with built-in modding, RPG-style biomes, prefab dungeons, and the Hypixel team's well-known eye for polish. Update 5 (May 26, 2026) added community server discovery, which means listed community realms are about to spike in visibility.
Realistic sizing:
| Server type | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 player friend group | 4 GB | Vanilla, no plugins |
| 5–8 player active group | 6–8 GB | Light plugins, 8-chunk view distance |
| 16–32 slot community realm | 10–16 GB | Plugin set, custom gamemode |
| Modded / total conversion | 14–16+ GB | Heavy mods |
Catch: Java 25 is required — older JVMs won't start the server. Plugin API is still maturing; some "early plugins" are unstable. Authentication uses an account-bound Game Profile and a device-code login on first boot, which is a one-time operator step that confuses people if it's not documented. (We have an internal runbook; see the Hytale RAM sizing guide for the customer-facing version.)
3. Windrose — pirate-age survival, free dedicated tool
Released: April 14, 2026, on Steam (game app 3041230, dedicated server app 4129620).
Why it's worth hosting: Joom Capital shipped the dedicated server as a free, anonymous-downloadable SteamCMD tool. That's hosting-friendly behaviour you wish more studios copied — no game-licence dance on the host, no separate signup, just app_update 4129620 validate and you're running. 2–10 player crews build, craft, sail, fight; the world is large and ship physics are surprisingly meaty.
Realistic sizing:
| Crew | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Duo | 8 GB | Workable floor |
| 3–4 players | 12 GB | Standard crew |
| 5–8 players | 16 GB | Full crew, fleet builds |
| 8–10 (EA cap) | 24 GB | Plus host headroom |
Catch: Windows binary, runs through Proton on Linux. NAT punch-through handles client connections, which is great for end users but trips up self-hosters who expect to forward a fixed port. Open the server port in your firewall anyway — the actual game traffic flows through it after the punch-through handshake. Detailed walkthrough in our Windrose setup guide.
4. Stormforge — Q1 2026 EA, server SKU still pending
Released: Steam Early Access targeting Q1 2026 (slipped a couple of weeks; check the Steam page for the firm date).
Why we're not listing it as orderable yet: Roboto Games has confirmed self-hosted server support, but as of late May the dedicated-server Steam SKU hasn't been published. We'll add it the moment the server binary is anonymous-downloadable; until then any host claiming "Stormforge servers available now" is shipping a placeholder.
If you've been promised a Stormforge server elsewhere already, ask which Steam app id they're pulling from. If the answer is "we'll figure it out at launch", that's a yellow flag.
5. Hytale-adjacent and Minecraft alternatives also worth a look
The 2026 voxel-sandbox scene isn't just Hytale. A few worth considering if you specifically want "Minecraft, but better" hosting:
- Vintage Story — long-standing community favourite, low RAM, very stable.
- Vintage Mods MP overhauls for original Minecraft (Iris, Fabric, Sodium) — still the cheapest path to a polished server if your community is happy on classic MC.
- Boundless — small-scale but cult following, dedicated server is community-maintained.
None of these need a "new in 2026" badge, but they're routinely overlooked when teams shop for a server in the same conversation as Hytale.
What we'd skip in 2026
Two anti-recommendations.
Light No Fire dedicated servers. Hello Games has not shipped a public dedicated server binary, and the community has been asking for one since 2024. Anyone selling "Light No Fire hosting" today is selling vapor.
Ashes of Creation private servers. Intrepid is targeting Alpha Two phase three, the game is MMO-shaped (not crew-shaped), and there is no licensed private-server pathway. Wait for the actual launch.
The honest summary
If you're shopping for a new 2026 server to host with friends:
- You like ocean survival and your crew is small (≤8): Subnautica 2. Day-one dedi, low RAM floor, big "we've waited for this" energy.
- You're a Minecraft community looking for the next chapter: Hytale. The plugin ecosystem is the differentiator.
- You want pirates, ships and crew chaos: Windrose. Higher RAM needs, but the dedicated-tool ergonomics are great.
We host all three at Renzom. Servers spin up in 1–3 minutes, monthly billing, EU latency. If you want the configurator with live pricing, that's at /pricing.
